Jamie Schaafsma scored and added an assist and Kyle Thomas provided what proved to be the game winning goal as the Fort Wayne Komets built a 3-0 lead before holding off the host Quad City Mallards' comeback bid to claim a 3-2 victory Saturday night and eliminate the Mallards in five games in the Central Division semifinals.

The Komets' Trevor Cheek scored the game's first goal on a rebound at 6:33 of the first period. Schaafsma's power play tip-in stretched the gap to 2-0 at 17:10 of the first.

Thomas scored another Fort Wayne power play goal from the slot to extend the lead to three at 12:14 of the second period, but the Mallards would soon battle back into the game. It was during a Quad City power play that Grant Arnold scored the first Mallard goal from point-blank range with just 15 seconds left in the second. The Mallards then pulled within one a minute and 46 seconds into the third period when Chris Francis steered home Kevin Gibson's centering pass. The Komets and goaltender Pat Nagle- who made 29 saves- would, however, keep the Mallards at bay for the remainder of the third on the way to a series-clinching win.
