Matt Boyd scored twice and Ty Rimmer made 29 saves as the Quad City Mallards defeated the host Wichita Thunder 4-1 Saturday night. The win halted the Mallards’ (25-14-8, 58 points) three game losing streak and moved Quad City into a fourth place tie with the Allen Americans while the loss was the Thunder’s (22-24-4, 48 points) second in as many nights.
The Mallards were shorthanded when Boyd opened the scoring by jamming in a rebound to finish off a 2-on-1 rush at 8:10 of the second period. Vladimir Nikiforov’s power play tip-in doubled the Mallard lead at 16:34 of the second. With just 1:23 left in the middle frame Boyd struck again, scoring from the slot to widen the gap to 3-0.
R.G. Flath’s wraparound goal got the Thunder on the scoreboard at 11:21 of the third period, but Gabriel Levesque would clinch victory for the Mallards by scoring an empty net goal with two minutes and three seconds left in the contest.
